Listen to this article

“And between the going up of the corner unto the sheep gate repaired the goldsmiths and the merchants.”

Nehemiah 3 describes the extensive work of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, which had been destroyed during the Babylonian exile. This chapter provides a detailed account of various individuals and groups who took part in the reconstruction efforts.

In verse 32, we see that the goldsmiths and the merchants were actively involved in the rebuilding process. They repaired a specific section of the wall, “between the going up of the corner unto the sheep gate.” This indicates that they took responsibility for a particular portion of the wall and worked diligently to restore it.

The mention of the goldsmiths and merchants is noteworthy because it demonstrates that people from various professions and backgrounds participated in the restoration of Jerusalem. This passage reveals that the reconstruction efforts were not limited to skilled laborers or individuals with specific expertise in construction. Rather, it shows that the collective effort of people from diverse backgrounds was crucial to the successful rebuilding of the city’s defences.

This passage teaches us several important lessons. First, it highlights the significance of unity and cooperation among people, irrespective of their professions or backgrounds, in accomplishing a common goal. The goldsmiths and merchants may have had different skill sets and occupations, but they set aside their differences to work together for the greater good.

Secondly, this passage reminds us of the importance of taking responsibility for the tasks entrusted to us. The goldsmiths and merchants did not shy away from their responsibility to repair a specific section of the wall. They recognised the significance of their contribution and diligently carried out their assigned task.

Lastly, Nehemiah 3:32 encourages us to use our unique skills and talents for the service of God and His Kingdom. The goldsmiths and merchants utilised their expertise in repairing the wall, demonstrating that God can use our specific abilities and occupations to accomplish His purposes. We, too, should offer our skills and resources for the advancement of God’s work, whether it is within the church or in other areas of our lives.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 3:32 highlights the importance of unity, responsibility, and the use of individual skills and talents in accomplishing common goals. It teaches us to work together, take ownership of our tasks, and offer our abilities for the service of God and others.
