Nehemiah 4:14
“And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
Historical Context: The book of Nehemiah is set during the period of Israel’s history when they were rebuilding Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, was burdened by the news of Jerusalem’s broken walls and gates. He received permission from the king to go and oversee the rebuilding process. Nehemiah faced opposition and threats from enemies who wanted to hinder the restoration project.
- Nehemiah’s Response:
In Nehemiah 4:14, we see Nehemiah’s reaction to the threats and intimidation tactics of their enemies. He looked at the situation, rose up, and addressed the nobles, rulers, and the people. His response provides us with valuable lessons.
Do Not Be Afraid: Nehemiah’s first instruction to the people was, “Be not ye afraid of them.” He recognised that fear was a natural response in the face of opposition and danger. However, he encouraged the people to overcome their fear and not let it paralyse them. As believers, we will face opposition and challenges in our lives, but God calls us not to fear but to trust in Him.
Remember the Lord: Nehemiah reminded the people to “remember the Lord, which is great and terrible.” By calling them to remember the Lord, Nehemiah emphasised the importance of their relationship with God. He wanted them to focus on the greatness and awesomeness of God, who is their protector, provider, and deliverer. Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past gives us confidence and strength to face the battles ahead.
Fight for Your Brethren: Nehemiah urged the people to fight for their brethren, their families, and their homes. The rebuilding of the walls was not just a physical project but also a spiritual battle. Nehemiah recognised the importance of unity and the need to protect one another. Likewise, as believers, we are called to fight against the forces of evil, to stand up for truth and righteousness, and to defend and support one another.
Application to our Lives: a. Overcoming fear: When faced with challenges, we should not be consumed by fear. Instead, we must trust in God’s strength and faithfulness to guide us through difficult times.
b. Remembering God’s greatness: Reflecting on God’s character and past faithfulness will give us courage and confidence in the midst of trials.
c. Standing for others: As part of the body of Christ, we should support and fight for our fellow believers, interceding for them and protecting them when they face opposition.
In conclusion, Nehemiah 4:14 serves as a reminder for us to trust in God, overcome fear, remember His greatness, and fight for one another in the face of opposition and challenges.
