Nehemiah 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.”

This verse is part of the account of Nehemiah’s leadership in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah had faced opposition from his enemies, including Sanballat and Tobiah, who sought to disrupt the work and hinder the progress of the wall’s reconstruction. In verse 10, Nehemiah recounts how Shemaiah, a prophet, approached him with a seemingly prophetic message.

In this verse, Nehemiah reveals that he discerned the true intentions behind Shemaiah’s message. He realised that God had not sent Shemaiah as a true prophet, but rather, that he was being manipulated by Tobiah and Sanballat. Nehemiah understood that the purpose of Shemaiah’s prophecy was to intimidate him, to make him afraid and force him to compromise his work. However, Nehemiah saw through the deception and recognised the true source of the message.

This verse teaches us several important lessons:

Discernment:Nehemiah’s ability to discern the true intentions behind Shemaiah’s prophecy is commendable. It reminds us of the importance of being discerning and wise when it comes to receiving messages or advice from others. Not everything that appears spiritual or comes in the name of God is necessarily from Him. We need to rely on the discernment given by the Holy Spirit and the wisdom found in God’s Word to recognise truth from deception.

Opposition:Nehemiah faced significant opposition throughout his leadership. His enemies sought to distract, intimidate, and discourage him. Similarly, as believers, we may encounter opposition when we strive to fulfil God’s purposes in our lives. This verse reminds us to stay vigilant and steadfast, even in the face of opposition. By relying on God’s guidance, we can overcome the tactics of the enemy and stay focused on the task at hand.

Integrity:Nehemiah’s refusal to compromise his work reveals his commitment to integrity. Despite the pressure and threats, he remained faithful to the task God had given him. In our own lives, we should be encouraged to uphold integrity, even when faced with difficult circumstances or temptations to compromise. It is important to stay true to God’s calling and stand firm in our convictions.

God’s Providence:Nehemiah’s discernment was not solely based on his own abilities, but on the guidance of God. He perceived that God had not sent Shemaiah as a true prophet. This verse reminds us of God’s providence and His ability to reveal the truth to those who seek Him. It is crucial for us to rely on God’s guidance, seeking His wisdom and discernment in every situation we face.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 6:12 highlights the importance of discernment, the reality of opposition, the value of integrity, and the need for God’s guidance in our lives. By learning from Nehemiah’s example, we can grow in our own faith and navigate the challenges we encounter, remaining steadfast in our commitment to follow God’s will.
