Nehemiah 7:22

“The men of Netophah, fifty and six.”

Historical Context:During the Babylonian exile, the people of Judah were taken captive, and Jerusalem was destroyed. After the seventy years of exile, the Persian King Cyrus issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple and the city walls. Nehemiah, serving as the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, played a crucial role in the restoration efforts.

  • Understanding the Verse:Nehemiah 7:22 specifically mentions the “men of Netophah.” Netophah was a town located in the territory of Judah, and its inhabitants were part of the group of people who returned from exile to rebuild Jerusalem. The number mentioned in the verse, “fifty and six,” indicates the count of the men from Netophah who participated in the restoration project.
