Nehemiah 7:47

The children of Keros, the children of Sia, the children of Padon, Nehemiah 7:47 (KJV)

Nehemiah 7:47 is part of a larger passage that records the genealogy and list of those who returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, played a significant role in leading the Israelites in the restoration of Jerusalem’s walls and spiritual revival. Historically Jerusalem had been destroyed and many Israelites were taken into exile in Babylon; after King Cyrus’s decree some Jews returned to rebuild the temple and the city walls, with Nehemiah facilitating the restoration process.

The verse mentions the Nethinims, a group appointed to serve in the temple and assist the Levites. They were not Israelites by birth but were dedicated to supporting priestly duties. Sources indicate that the Nethinims were originally appointed during the time of King David and King Solomon (1 Chronicles 9:2; Ezra 8:20). In the biblical text the Nethinims and the children of Solomon’s servants are listed as separate groups, the latter being identified as descendants of the servants who served under King Solomon, the son of David.

Although Nehemiah 7:47 appears to be a simple enumeration, it underscores the importance of service within God’s kingdom. The Nethinims, though not priests or Levites, played a vital role in temple operations, reflecting God’s faithfulness in preserving a remnant of His people despite exile and destruction. Their presence among the returnees demonstrates that God maintains the identity and lineage of those who are devoted to His work.

The passage also offers broader spiritual lessons. Believers today may hold diverse roles within the church, yet each person contributes uniquely through gifts and callings to advance God’s work. The emphasis on service reminds us that every individual, regardless of background or position, has purpose and can support the work of God in families, churches, and communities.
