“Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.”

Context:Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I, but he had a deep concern for the city of Jerusalem and its inhabitants. He received permission from the king to return to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls, which had been destroyed. Nehemiah’s efforts in the rebuilding process were accompanied by spiritual revival among the people.

Spiritual leaders:In Nehemiah 8:7, we encounter a group of individuals who played an important role in the spiritual awakening of the people. The names listed here include Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah. These individuals were Levites, members of the priestly tribe, who were responsible for teaching and interpreting the law to the people.

Teaching the Law:The verse states that these Levites “caused the people to understand the law.” The people had gathered to hear the reading of the Book of the Law by Ezra the scribe. However, it was the responsibility of these Levites to help the people comprehend and apply the law to their lives. They acted as teachers, providing explanations, answering questions, and giving practical instructions based on the law.

Importance of understanding:The phrase “caused the people to understand” highlights the significance of comprehending God’s law. Mere reading or hearing the law is not sufficient; understanding is crucial. The Levites played a pivotal role in ensuring that the people grasped the meaning and implications of the law, enabling them to live according to God’s commands.

Standing in their place:The verse concludes with the statement, “and the people stood in their place.” This phrase suggests that the people remained attentive and receptive to the teaching of the law. They recognized the authority and importance of the law, and they were willing to learn and submit to its guidance.

Overall, Nehemiah 8:7 emphasizes the role of the Levites in helping the people understand God’s law. It highlights the significance of comprehension and the willingness of the people to receive instruction. This passage reminds us of the importance of studying and understanding God’s Word, and the role of spiritual leaders in guiding and teaching others.
