The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Bible, continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this chapter God commands Moses to take a census of the people of Israel, counting the number of men who are able to go to war.
Understanding the Tribe of Benjamin: Benjamin was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, named after Jacob’s youngest son. The tribe was allocated a portion of land in the Promised Land. Its territory lay north of Judah, bordering Judah’s southern border, and later included Jerusalem within its borders. This positioning placed Benjamin between Judah and the lands of Ephraim.
Abidan the Son of Gideoni: In this verse we encounter Abidan, identified as the son of Gideoni. The biblical record provides little detail about Abidan or his father, and they are not prominent figures elsewhere in Scripture. Nevertheless, Abidan was chosen as the representative of the tribe of Benjamin in the census conducted by Moses, indicating that God raises leaders from unexpected places.
Lessons from Numbers 1:11:
Equal Representation – The census records each tribe separately, showing that every tribe was represented in the count, even though the numbers of men differed. This highlights the importance of each tribe and each individual within the community of Israel and demonstrates that God values every member of His people, regardless of worldly prominence.

Application:
Value Each Person – Let this passage prompt us to appreciate every individual in the Christian community, recognizing that each person has a unique role regardless of background or status.
Recognize God’s Sovereign Leadership – Be open to accepting and supporting leaders God raises up, understanding that their appointment is part of His sovereign plan.
Remember God’s Personal Care – Find assurance in the truth that God knows us intimately and cares for us personally, especially in times of doubt or difficulty.
