Luke 14 recounts a series of teachings and encounters with Jesus as He dines at the home of a Pharisee. As He observes the guests vying for the places of honor, Jesus imparts a parable, urging humility and encouraging His followers to take the lowest place at a feast. He advises that true honor comes from God, who exalts the humble.
Jesus then addresses the host, suggesting that when he hosts a feast, he should invite the poor, the disabled, and the marginalized, rather than expecting reciprocity from the wealthy. This act of love and generosity will be rewarded in the resurrection of the righteous.
One of the guests, moved by Jesus’ words, exclaims the blessedness of those who will eat at the “feast in the kingdom of God.” Jesus responds with a parable, illustrating how many make excuses and reject the invitation to this heavenly feast, but God’s house will be filled with the poor, the outcasts, and the gentiles.
Continuing on the theme of discipleship, Jesus explains the cost of following Him. He emphasizes the importance of counting the cost before embarking on the journey of faith and encourages His followers to forsake all else and prioritize their commitment to Him. He concludes with the illustration of salt, stating that disciples should have a lasting impact and bring flavor to the world.
