Context

Jesus spoke this parable at a Sabbath meal in the house of a Pharisee, just after teaching about humility and about inviting the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind. A fellow guest had exclaimed, “Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God” (Luke 14:15). Jesus replied with this story to correct a common assumption about who would share in that kingdom.

Meaning

The “certain man” represents God, and the “great supper” pictures the kingdom of God and the invitation to salvation. The “many” who were bidden stand for the people first offered that invitation, especially the religious leaders and others who heard Jesus’ teaching. The parable continues with the invited guests making excuses, showing how worldly concerns can keep people from accepting God’s call.

The supper is not the Lord’s Supper, which had not yet been instituted, nor the final marriage supper of the Lamb. It is the gospel invitation itself, offered freely and generously.

Biblical connections

The parable directly answers the blessing in Luke 14:15 and prepares for the verses that follow, where the master sends his servant to invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame, and then compels others from the highways and hedges. This shows that God’s kingdom is not limited to one group but is open to all who will come.

Application

This verse challenges us to examine our own response to God’s invitation. Are we making excuses, or are we responding with eagerness? It also reminds us that God’s grace is abundant and His desire is to include as many as possible. We are called to prioritize our relationship with Him above material possessions, personal ambitions, and earthly distractions.

Reflection

God’s invitation is gracious and generous, but it demands a response. The parable warns that those who refuse will be shut out, while those who accept, even from the margins of society, will fill the feast. Let us not take lightly the great supper to which we have been called.
