Luke 14:3

“And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?”

Context:In the preceding verses (Luke 14:1-2), Jesus enters a Pharisee’s house to eat a meal. There, he encounters a man suffering from dropsy, a condition characterised by abnormal swelling. The Pharisees and lawyers were present, closely observing Jesus, likely intending to find fault with him.

The Sabbath:The Sabbath was a sacred day of rest and worship for the Jewish people, observed from Friday evening to Saturday evening. The Pharisees held strict interpretations of Sabbath laws and often criticised Jesus for healing on the Sabbath, considering it a violation of their understanding of the law.

Healing on the Sabbath:Jesus, aware of the intentions of the religious leaders, raises a question to challenge their rigid interpretation of the Sabbath law. He asks if it is lawful (permissible) to heal on the Sabbath day. By doing so, Jesus draws attention to the compassionate nature of God’s work, emphasising that acts of mercy and healing should not be limited or withheld because of a specific day.

Jesus’ Message:Through this question, Jesus emphasises the importance of mercy, love, and compassion over strict legalistic adherence to rules and regulations. Jesus teaches that the Sabbath is meant to be a day of rest and worship, but it should not hinder acts of kindness and healing towards those in need.
