Numbers 10:31

And he said, Leaue vs not, I pray thee, forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encampe in the wilderuesse, and thou mayest bee to vs in stead of eyes. Numbers 10:31 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. In this verse Moses is speaking to Hobab, his brother‑in‑law and the son of Jethro, inviting him to join the community on its trek. Hobab had previously served as a guide for the people (see Numbers 10:29‑30), and his intimate knowledge of the terrain was a priceless asset in a land without maps or familiar landmarks.

The passage underscores the importance of guidance. In the wilderness the Israelites needed someone who knew the way, and Hobab’s expertise could serve as “eyes” for the whole congregation. This principle extends to our own lives: just as the Israelites required a skilled guide, we benefit from godly wisdom and counsel as we navigate personal challenges and uncertainties.

Moses’ appeal also reveals humility and dependence. Even as the appointed leader, he openly acknowledges his need for assistance and affirms the value of Hobab’s experience. Such humility teaches that true leadership includes recognizing our limitations and being willing to seek help from those who possess greater knowledge or experience.

The verse further highlights the role of community. By invoking God’s blessing on Hobab—asking that the LORD keep the people “as an eye” and “as a shield”—Moses emphasizes the protective and supportive function each member can play within the body of believers. When individuals contribute their gifts, the collective well‑being of the community is strengthened, and the group can achieve more together than any one person could alone.

Spiritually, the text points us to seek God’s direction as our ultimate “eye” and “shield” in the wilderness of faith. While Hobab’s insight was vital for the physical journey, God’s omniscient guidance is essential for our spiritual pilgrimage. We are encouraged to pray for God’s blessing on those who lead and protect us, to honor their service, and to rely continually on divine wisdom as we move forward.

Overall, Numbers 10:31 teaches the significance of guidance, the necessity of humility, the value of community, and the need to depend on God’s continual direction in both physical and spiritual journeys.
