Numbers 13:31
But the men that went vp with him, said, Wee be not able to goe vp against the people, for they are stronger then we. Numbers 13:31 (KJV)
This verse is part of the account of the twelve spies that Moses sent to explore the land of Canaan, which God had promised to give to the Israelites as their inheritance. Moses selected one representative from each of the twelve tribes to spy out the land, and after forty days they returned to give their report.
In Numbers 13:31 the ten of the twelve spies expressed fear and doubt, acknowledging that the people living there were strong and mighty. Their negative report described giants in the land and fortified cities, and they concluded that they were not able to go up against the people because the inhabitants were stronger than they were.
The report was divided. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, expressed faith in God’s promise and encouraged the people to trust in the Lord. Their perspective differed from the majority, as they believed that with God’s help they would be victorious in taking possession of the land.
This passage presents a crucial lesson about faith and trust in God’s promises. The ten spies allowed fear and their limited understanding to cloud their judgment, focusing on obstacles rather than on the faithfulness and power of God. In contrast, Joshua and Caleb demonstrated unwavering faith, seeing the same challenges but believing that God was with them and that the strength of their enemies was irrelevant compared to the strength of their God.
Today the passage reminds us that when we face challenges or uncertainties, it is essential to anchor our faith in God’s promises. Our outlook greatly impacts our response; focusing on our limitations can lead to doubt and fear, while shifting our focus to the greatness and faithfulness of God enables us to face challenges with confidence and determination.
In conclusion, Numbers 13:31 teaches the importance of fixing our eyes on God’s faithfulness and power rather than on our limitations. By doing so we can overcome fear and doubt, move forward with confidence, and trust that God is with us and will fulfill His promises.
