Numbers 14:44

Listen to this article

But they presumed to go vp vnto the hill top: neuertheles the Arke of the Couenant of the Lord, and Moses departed not out of the campe. Numbers 14:44 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers recounts the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, the Israelites were on the brink of entering the land of Canaan, which God had promised to give them; however, upon sending spies to explore the land, the majority of them returned with a report filled with fear and doubt, and the people became discouraged, rebelled against God and Moses, expressed a desire to return to Egypt, and even plotted to stone their leaders.

Presumption and Its Consequences: The verse starts by stating, “But they presumed to go up unto the hill top.” The Israelites, in their rebellious state, made the decision to proceed against God’s command to turn back and not attempt to enter the Promised Land. Their presumption reflected a lack of trust in God’s guidance and an attitude that disregarded His instructions. Presumption often leads to disobedience and carries serious consequences. In this case, the Israelites were defying God’s will and separating themselves from His presence.

The Ark of the Covenant: The verse continues, “Nevertheless, the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.” The ark of the covenant was a sacred symbol of God’s presence among the Israelites. It held the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. The fact that the ark of the covenant remained in the camp while the people presumptuously went up the hill signifies that God’s presence was not with them in their disobedience. The ark’s location in the camp signified that God’s presence remained with the community, even amid their rebellion, and God and Moses remained faithful and did not abandon them.

Lessons for Us: This passage reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. The Israelites’ presumption and disobedience resulted in their separation from God’s presence and blessings. It also highlights the need for humility before God, trusting in His guidance rather than relying on our own understanding. Finally, it shows that God’s faithfulness endures even when people fail, and that His presence remains central to our journey.

Application: As we reflect on Numbers 14:44, it is essential to examine our own lives. Are we prone to presumption, thinking that our plans and desires supersede God’s will? Do we rely on our own understanding rather than seeking God’s guidance? This passage encourages us to humble ourselves, trust in God’s leading, and obediently follow His commands. Let us strive to cultivate a heart of humility, obedience, and reliance on God’s wisdom and guidance. Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult reliable commentaries or study Bibles for a more comprehensive understanding of the passage.
