Numbers 15:12

According to the number that ye shall prepare, so shall ye do to every one according to their number.

Numbers 15:12 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In Numbers 15, God gives Moses detailed laws about offerings the people are to bring when they enter the land. These instructions cover grain, drink, and burnt offerings, and they stress exactness in worship. The chapter also includes laws about unintentional sins and the penalty for defiant sin, showing how seriously God regards obedience.

God tells Israel that the quantity of each offering must match the number they prepare. The phrase “According to the number that ye shall prepare” stresses precision and accuracy. God expects them to follow His commands without deviation. The phrase “so shall ye do to every one according to their number” means each offering, whether large or small, must be made in the same prescribed manner. This reflects God’s nature as a God of order and detail. The instruction is not about the size of the gift but about faithful consistency in how it is brought.

The principle of precise obedience appears throughout Scripture. In the New Testament, believers are called to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1). While the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament are not directly binding on Christians, the underlying attitude of reverence and careful obedience remains. God values faithfulness in small details, not only in grand gestures. This same care appears in Jesus’ teaching about being faithful in little things (Luke 16:10).

This verse reminds us to follow God’s instructions faithfully. We should not treat His commands lightly or pick and choose which ones to obey. Attention to detail matters in our service to God. Whether in worship, work, or daily life, we can honor Him by doing things with sincerity and accuracy. Integrity in worship means offering ourselves fully to God, not just going through outward motions. Our hearts should be devoted to Him, and our actions should match our words. God sees the care we take, even when no one else notices.

God’s instructions are clear and consistent, and His character never changes. Just as He guided the Israelites with precise commands, He guides us today through His Word and Spirit. We can trust His promises and rely on His faithfulness. This verse calls us to approach worship with reverence and intentionality, ensuring that our lives align with His revealed will. It also encourages us to be faithful in the small details, knowing that God sees and values our obedience.
