Numbers 16:9

Listen to this article

Seemeth it but a small thing vnto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the Congregation of Israel, to bring you neere to himselfe, to doe the seruice of the Tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the Congregation to minister vnto them? Numbers 16:9 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 16 we read about the rebellion led by Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and others against Moses and Aaron’s leadership. They challenged the authority and roles assigned by God to Moses and Aaron.

God’s Separation: In Numbers 16:9 Moses addresses the rebels, reminding them that God had set them apart from the rest of the congregation to serve Him. The Lord called them to stand before the people and minister to them on His behalf, a task that was not a trivial matter.

The Privilege of Service: Moses highlights the privilege and honour bestowed upon these individuals. They were not ordinary Israelites; they were given a unique role in the worship and service of God, with the opportunity to be close to the tabernacle and to minister to the people. This responsibility required faithfulness and reverence.

Grumbling and Discontentment: The rebellion stemmed from discontent with the roles and positions assigned to them. They coveted greater authority and the priesthood reserved for Aaron’s lineage. Yet Moses reminds them that the role they already possessed was a special one, chosen by God Himself.

Lessons for Today:

Contentment: The passage teaches the importance of being content in the roles and positions God has given us, serving faithfully where He has placed us rather than longing for greater recognition.

Humility: Recognising that God has chosen and set us apart for specific tasks should cultivate humility. We should not despise the responsibilities entrusted to us but embrace them with gratitude.

God’s Calling: Every believer has a unique calling and purpose within the body of Christ. It is essential to seek God’s will and fulfill the tasks assigned to us with dedication and obedience.

In Numbers 16:9 Moses reminds the rebels of the privilege and honour of their service and challenges their discontentment, offering timeless lessons about contentment, humility, and embracing the calling God has placed upon our lives.
