Listen to this article

And Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord, vnto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and tooke euery man his rod. Numbers 17:9 (KJV)

Context

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this chapter the people were rebelling against the leadership of Moses and Aaron, and God intended to establish the priesthood and put an end to the conflict and questioning of their authority.

Explanation

In Numbers 17 God commands Moses to collect twelve staffs—one from each tribe of Israel, including Aaron’s staff for the tribe of Levi. The staffs were to be placed in the tabernacle before the Ark of the Covenant as a test of authority and a confirmation of the chosen priesthood. Verse 8 records that Aaron’s staff blossomed, budded, and produced almonds while in the presence of the Ark, a supernatural sign of God’s choice for Aaron and the Levites to serve as priests. Verse 9 follows this miraculous confirmation: Moses brings out all the rods before the people, and each individual from the twelve tribes looks upon the rods and takes back his own. This visual confirmation further emphasizes the divine selection of Aaron and the Levites, as each tribe recognizes and retrieves its respective staff.

Lessons and Applications

Divine Appointment – God has the authority to choose and appoint leaders. The budding of Aaron’s staff signified that God had selected him and his descendants to serve as the nation’s priests, teaching us to respect and honor those placed in positions of authority within God’s Kingdom.

God’s Confirming Signs – Throughout Scripture God uses signs and miracles to validate His word and His chosen servants. The miraculous blossoming of Aaron’s staff provided clear evidence of divine intervention, reminding us that God can work wonders to demonstrate His will and confirm His plans.

Unity and Order – The act of each tribe retrieving its rod after the miracle promoted unity and order among the Israelites. It affirmed their individual tribal identities while acknowledging the authority of the priesthood, highlighting the importance of maintaining unity within the body of Christ while respecting the unique gifts and callings of individuals.

Trusting God’s Selections – The Israelites had questioned and rebelled against Moses and Aaron, but the sign of the budding staff revealed God’s choice and ended the disputes. This reminds believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to choose and establish leaders according to His divine plan.

In conclusion, Numbers 17:9 showcases the divine confirmation of Aaron’s priesthood through the miraculous blossoming of his staff. The event underscores the importance of God’s selection, the need for unity, and the call to trust and honor the leaders God appoints.
