Numbers 20:20

Listen to this article

And he said, Thou shalt not goe thorow. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. Numbers 20:20 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Moses and the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. At this point they had been wandering for many years after being freed from slavery in Egypt. The Israelites were seeking passage through the land of Edom on their way to the Promised Land. Moses requested permission from the king of Edom to pass through his territory, but the king refused and mobilized a large and powerful army against them. Consequently the Israelites were denied passage and had to seek an alternative route.

Obstacles and Challenges: The refusal of the Edomite king represents a significant obstacle for the people of God. Throughout their wilderness wanderings the Israelites encountered many trials, and this denial was one of the most striking. It reminds us that even when we pursue God’s promises, unexpected difficulties and opposition may arise.

Trust in God’s Providence: Faced with this barrier the Israelites were called to trust in God’s provision and guidance. Though barred from Edom, God would open another way for them to reach their destination. The passage encourages believers to rely on God’s sovereignty in challenging times and to seek His direction through the obstacles we face.

Lessons on Perseverance: The experience of Numbers 20:20 teaches the value of perseverance. Despite the setback, the Israelites did not abandon their journey; they pressed on and found a different path. Likewise, personal setbacks and rejections should not deter us, but rather strengthen our resolve to continue in faith, trusting that God’s plans will ultimately prevail.

Human Responses: The narrative also highlights contrasting human responses. Moses approached the Edomite king with a request for peaceful passage, while the king responded with aggression and denial. This contrast underscores the importance of diplomacy, peaceful communication, and seeking reconciliation even when faced with hostility.

In summary, Numbers 20:20 illustrates the challenges faced by the Israelites in their wilderness journey and the need for trust in God’s guidance and provision. It encourages us to persevere in the face of obstacles, remain faithful, and seek peaceful resolutions whenever possible.
