Listen to this article

And Sihon would not suffer Israel to passe thorow his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wildernes: and he came to Iahaz, and fought against Israel. Numbers 21:23 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Torah and records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. In this passage the people encounter Sihon, king of the Amorites.

Historical Background: The Amorites were a Canaanite people occupying the Transjordan region east of the Jordan River. Sihon ruled from Heshbon and controlled several cities in that area.

Sihon’s Opposition: When the Israelites requested passage through his territory, Sihon refused. He gathered his people and went out into the wilderness to confront Israel, leading to battle at Jahaz.

The Location: Jahaz was a city within Amorite territory, generally identified with a site in present‑day Jordan, east of the Dead Sea.

Spiritual Significance: The episode illustrates the continual challenges the Israelites faced on their pilgrimage. Their need to trust God was tested as they met hostile forces that sought to block their progress.

God’s Faithfulness: Although the verse itself does not name God, the broader narrative of Numbers records that God delivered the Amorites into Israel’s hands, granting victory and securing the way to the Promised Land.

Application: The account reminds believers that spiritual journeys often involve obstacles and opposition. As God proved faithful to Israel, He remains faithful to His people today. Trust in His guidance and provision, even when faced with battles, is a timeless lesson.

Studying the entire context of Numbers and consulting reliable commentaries can deepen understanding of the historical and theological dimensions of this passage.
