Numbers 22:24

But the Angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, & a wall on that side. Numbers 22:24 (KJV)

Numbers 22 records the encounter between Balaam and the Angel of the Lord. The Israelites, led by Moses, had journeyed through the wilderness and arrived on the plains of Moab. Balak, king of Moab, grew alarmed at the increasing numbers of Israel and sent messengers to Balaam, a diviner or prophet, offering him rewards to curse the people. Initially Balaam refused, saying he could speak only the words the Lord placed in his mouth. When Balak persisted and sent more distinguished princes, Balaam sought the Lord again. This time the Lord permitted him to go, but instructed him to speak only what He commanded.

As Balaam set out on his donkey, the Angel of the Lord stood in the way as an adversary. Verse 24 specifies that the angel stood in a narrow path of the vineyards, with a wall on each side, emphasizing the confined space and limited options for Balaam and his donkey. Balaam could not see the angel, but the donkey did and tried to avoid the danger by turning into a field. Each time the donkey veered off the path, Balaam struck it to bring it back. This happened three times until the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel standing in the way.

The angel’s purpose was to convey a message and to change Balaam’s perspective, preventing him from proceeding on a wrong course. The incident shows how God can use unexpected means—here a donkey—to draw attention and redirect a path. It demonstrates God’s sovereignty, His willingness to guide and correct those who are willing to listen, and the reality that spiritual blindness can keep us from seeing divine intervention.

Overall, Numbers 22:24 highlights divine intervention in a confined setting, the blindness to spiritual realities, and the necessity of recognizing God’s guidance. The passage encourages believers to be attentive and responsive to God’s leading, even when it means deviating from personal plans or desires.
