Numbers 23:26
But Balaam answered, and said vnto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the Lord speaketh, that I must doe? Numbers 23:26 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the narrative of the prophet Balaam and his dealings with Balak, king of Moab. Balak had summoned Balaam to curse the Israelites because he feared their increasing strength and numbers. Yet the Lord had instructed Balaam not to curse Israel but to bless them. In Numbers 23:26 Balaam replies to Balak’s frustration, reminding him that he had already declared he could speak only what the Lord had spoken to him.
Earlier in the chapter Balaam had pronounced blessings over Israel twice, despite Balak’s attempts to influence him otherwise. Each time Balaam opened his mouth, only blessings came forth, as directed by the Lord. Balaam’s response therefore reflects his commitment to obeying God’s instructions. He acknowledges the authority of God’s word and his responsibility to follow it faithfully.
The passage highlights an important aspect of the believer’s relationship with God: like Balaam, we are called to obey God’s commands and prioritize His will above the expectations and desires of others, even when pressure or temptation arises. Balaam’s words convey certainty and conviction in God’s word; he demonstrates unwavering commitment to delivering the message God gave him, regardless of circumstance or human expectation.
From this we learn to align our thoughts, words, and actions with God’s will. We should approach His word with reverence and follow it wholeheartedly, even when faced with challenges or opposition. The verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s word and the need to rely on His guidance rather than human expectations. It encourages steadfastness in our commitment to follow God’s will, just as Balaam did in his interactions with Balak.
