And Balak brought Balaam vnto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Ieshimon. Numbers 23:28 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this passage we encounter Balak, king of Moab, who sought to curse the Israelites through the prophet Balaam. Balak hoped that a curse would weaken the people of Israel and prevent them from advancing into Moab’s territory.

Balak’s Plan: Balak takes Balaam to the top of Peor, a high mountain that looks toward the Israelite camp and the surrounding wilderness. From this lofty position Balak intended that Balaam pronounce a curse on the Israelites, believing that the spoken words could bring harm and thwart their progress.

Balaam’s Prophecies: Despite Balak’s insistence, God would not permit a curse. Whenever Balaam opened his mouth, blessings for Israel flowed forth. His prophecies, contrary to Balak’s desires, spoke of the favour and protection that God had bestowed upon His people.

Symbolic Significance:

God’s Protection: The fact that Balak brought Balaam to a high place overlooking the camp indicates the Lord’s protective presence over His people. Though the Israelites were encamped below, God’s hand shielded them from the intended curses.

Foiled Plans: Balak’s attempt to curse Israel was thwarted, illustrating that no weapon formed against God’s chosen people will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). The episode demonstrates God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His promises through Balaam’s prophetic blessings.

Lessons for Believers:

Trust in God’s Protection – Just as God guarded and blessed the Israelites, believers can trust in His protection. Even when others plot harm or curses, God is our shield and refuge (Psalm 91:4).

God’s Sovereignty – The story reminds us that God’s plans prevail over human intentions. No matter the schemes of others, God remains in control, and His purposes will be accomplished (Proverbs 19:21).

Blessings Amidst Opposition – The account shows that God can turn adversaries’ evil intentions into blessings. In challenging situations, His grace and favour can shine forth, producing unexpected good outcomes (Romans 8:28).

In summary, the narrative in Numbers 22‑24 highlights Balak’s failed attempts to curse the Israelites and underscores the overarching theme of God’s faithfulness to His people. It encourages believers to trust in God’s protection, recognise His sovereignty, and remain hopeful for blessings even in the face of opposition.
