Numbers 23:1
And Balaam saide vnto Balak, Build me here seuen Altars, and prepare mee here seuen oxen, and seuen rammes. Numbers 23:1 (KJV)
The book of Numbers, the fourth book of Scripture, records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. In chapters 22‑24 we encounter the striking narrative of Balaam, a non‑Israelite prophet who was summoned by Balak, king of Moab, to curse the people of Israel. Balak, alarmed by the encampment of the Israelites near his territory, believed that Balaam’s reputed power could bring disaster upon his enemies. Yet God’s sovereign hand turned every intended curse into a blessing, demonstrating that human schemes cannot thwart divine purpose.
In Numbers 23:1 Balaam gives precise instructions to Balak: he is to build seven altars and to provide seven oxen and seven rams for sacrifice. The number seven repeatedly signifies completeness or perfection in biblical symbolism, underscoring the seriousness of the ritual. Altars served as the focal point for worship and sacrifice, where the offering of animals expressed devotion, sought divine favor, and invited God’s guidance.
The passage yields several spiritual lessons. First, it highlights obedience. Although Balaam faced tempting offers from Balak, he recognized that his ability to bless or curse depended on faithfully following God’s direction. Second, it stresses the necessity of seeking God’s counsel through worship and sacrificial living, rather than relying solely on personal insight. Third, it affirms God’s supreme authority over human affairs; even when Balak intended harm, God intervened and transformed the outcome for Israel’s benefit.
Applying these truths today, believers are called to prioritize obedience to God’s commands, especially when external pressures invite compromise. Regular prayer, worship, and a lifestyle of sacrificial generosity help align our hearts with divine will. Finally, we can find assurance in the knowledge that God remains in control of every circumstance, and His purposes will ultimately prevail despite opposition.
Studying the full narrative of Balaam in Numbers 22‑24 enriches our understanding of these themes and equips us to apply them faithfully in our own walk with God.
