Numbers 24:13

Listen to this article

If Balak would give mee his house full of siluer and gold, I cannot goe beyond the commandement of the Lord, to doe either good or bad of mine owne mind? But what the Lord saith, that will I speake. Numbers 24:13 (KJV)

Numbers 24 records the account of Balaam, a prophet hired by the Moabite king Balak to curse the Israelites. Balak was fearful of the growing Israelite nation and sought to thwart their progress. Each time Balaam attempted to pronounce a curse, God intervened and turned the utterance into a blessing, demonstrating divine sovereignty over human intent.

In this verse Balaam declares, “I have not taken any reward; for the LORD hath said, ‘Let your word be.’” His statement reflects a firm commitment to the commandments of the Lord. He acknowledges that he cannot act beyond God’s instruction, whether for good or ill, and therefore places obedience to divine law above personal desire or external pressure.

Balaam’s refusal to accept Balak’s offer of silver and gold underscores the supremacy of God’s authority over material wealth. By rejecting the bribe, he affirms that spiritual fidelity outweighs earthly riches, reminding believers that the pursuit of wealth must never eclipse devotion to God’s will.

The prophet also emphasizes his dependence on God’s guidance, insisting that he will speak only what the Lord commands. This humility highlights the importance of seeking divine wisdom in all decisions, speech, and actions, and trusting that true understanding originates from the Almighty rather than from human reasoning.

Balaam’s declaration showcases his faithfulness and integrity as a prophet. Despite the temptations and pressures surrounding him, he remains steadfast in delivering the message God has given him. This integrity serves as a model for believers to align their words and deeds with God’s truth, even amid adversity.

Application of this passage calls believers to prioritize God’s commandments, recognize His authority over material possessions, depend on His guidance, and uphold faithfulness and integrity. By doing so, one lives in harmony with God’s will and positions oneself to receive His blessings. As the study notes, the Bible should be examined in its entirety and context, encouraging further exploration of surrounding verses and consultation of additional biblical resources for a comprehensive understanding of the passage.
