Numbers 26:26
Of the sons of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family of the Sardites: of Elon, the family of the Elonites: of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.
Numbers 26:26 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 26 records the second census of Israel, taken on the plains of Moab as the people prepared to enter Canaan. This verse lists the families of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel, each with their clan. The census counted men for military service and for dividing the land among the tribes.
Meaning
Each family is named after a son of Zebulun, showing the tribe’s structure and growth. Zebulun’s number increased from 57,400 in the first census to 60,500 here, a sign of God’s blessing. The preservation of these names in Scripture reminds us that God values each family and individual within His covenant people.
Biblical connections
Genealogies confirmed inheritance rights and tribal identity in Israel. God promised Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars, and this census shows that promise continuing. The careful listing of each family also points to the New Testament truth that the church is the family of God, where each member is known and valued.
Application
God knows every believer by name, just as He recorded each clan. This gives assurance of belonging and purpose. The church is described as the household of God, where every member is precious. We can take comfort that our names are written in heaven, and we belong to a spiritual family with a heritage of faith.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness is seen in preserving and multiplying His people. Despite wilderness hardships, He kept His covenant. This verse encourages trust in God’s promises, knowing He remains faithful to His word. As we read these ancient names, we are reminded that God’s plan continues through generations, and we are part of that story.
