Numbers 28:24

Posted on 26 January 2024
Listen to this article

After this maner yee shall offer dayly throughout the seuen dayes, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet sauour vnto the Lord: it shal be offred beside the continuall burnt offring, and his drinke offering. Numbers 28:24 (KJV)

The book of Numbers belongs to the Pentateuch, the Torah, and records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Within its chapters God gives Moses detailed instructions concerning the Tabernacle worship, the various offerings, and the organization of Israel’s sacrificial system.

In this verse God commands the people to present a daily meat (or meal) offering for seven consecutive days. The offering is described as being “made by fire” and intended to produce a “sweet savour” that is pleasing to the Lord. It is to be offered alongside the continual burnt offering, the perpetual sacrifice that was offered each morning and evening.

The phrase “sweet savour” signifies the acceptability and pleasant aroma of the sacrifice before God. It reflects the Israelites’ obedience and reverence, indicating that their worship was to be offered with a heart that seeks to please the Almighty.

The continual burnt offering, also called the “tamid,” represented ongoing worship and atonement for the people. By placing the daily meat offering beside this perpetual sacrifice, the law emphasized a constant dedication to God, reinforcing the rhythm of daily devotion.

A related passage (Numbers 28:9, KJV) specifies the composition of the daily meal offering: a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a fourth part of an hin of oil, prepared as a sweet savour and accompanied by a drink offering. Though this verse refers to the regular daily practice, it helps illuminate the nature of the offering mentioned in 28:24.

Spiritual application flows from these ancient instructions. First, the call to a daily offering teaches the importance of consistent, daily devotion—spending time in prayer, Scripture, and worship as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). Second, the “sweet savour” reminds believers to live in a way that brings joy to God, obeying His commandments and honoring Him in everyday conduct (Colossians 3:20‑24). Third, offering the meat sacrifice beside the continual burnt offering points to a life of sacrificial living, surrendering personal ambitions to God’s purposes and serving Him wholeheartedly.

While the ceremonial system of the Old Covenant is fulfilled in Christ, studying verses such as Numbers 28:24 still offers valuable principles. Believers are encouraged to maintain daily devotion, pursue a life that pleases God, and embody sacrificial love, always remembering the broader redemptive narrative that culminates in Jesus Christ.
