Numbers 28:6

It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord.

Numbers 28:6 (KJV)

In Numbers 28, God gives Moses instructions about the offerings at the tabernacle. This verse describes the continual burnt offering, which was part of the Law given at Mount Sinai. This daily offering formed the foundation upon which other offerings, such as those for the Sabbath and festivals, were added.

The burnt offering, known in Hebrew as olah, meaning “to ascend” or “to go up,” was completely consumed by fire on the altar. This symbolized the worshiper’s total surrender and dedication to God. The fire represented purification and the removal of impurities. The phrase “a sweet savour” indicates that the sacrifice was pleasing and acceptable to the Lord, a fragrant aroma rising to Him. This offering was made daily, morning and evening, reminding Israel of their constant dependence on God and their need for atonement.

The reference to Mount Sinai connects this command to the covenant established there, showing that the sacrificial system was part of God’s revealed will for His people. For Christians, this continual offering points to Jesus Christ, who offered Himself once for all as a perfect and complete sacrifice. The daily repetition of the Old Testament offering foreshadows the eternal efficacy of Christ’s sacrifice, which secures our acceptance before God.

While the specific regulations for burnt offerings are not practiced today, the spiritual principle remains. Believers are called to present their lives as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1), maintaining ongoing devotion and surrender. Our worship should not be a one-time event but a continual practice, reflecting a heartfelt surrender to God.

The continual burnt offering reminds us that our devotion to God should be consistent and ongoing. Just as the offering was a sweet savour to the Lord, our lives, offered in faith and obedience, become a pleasing aroma to God through Christ. This verse calls us to offer ourselves fully, allowing God’s refining fire to purify and transform us daily.
