Numbers 3:31

Listen to this article

And their charge shall be the Arke, and the Table, and the Candlesticke, and the altars, and the vessels of the Sanctuarie, wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the seruice thereof. Numbers 3:31 (KJV)

The book of Numbers continues the narrative of Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land and records God’s instructions to Moses concerning the duties of the Levites, the tribe set apart for service in the Tabernacle. Numbers 3:31 specifies the particular charge given to the Kohathite clan of Levites. Their responsibility was to care for the most sacred objects and the associated service of the sanctuary.

The Kohathites were entrusted with the Ark of the Covenant, the holy chest that held the tablets of the Ten Commandments. Their role in transporting and safeguarding the Ark underscored the gravity of preserving God’s covenant with His people. In addition to the Ark, they were to look after the table of showbread, the golden candlestick (lampstand), and the altars used for offerings. Each of these items held both symbolic and practical significance in Israel’s worship.

The verse also mentions the vessels of the sanctuary—bowls, cups, and other utensils required for the ritual services. The Kohathites were charged with handling these implements, ensuring that the worship of God was conducted with reverence and order. Their duty extended to “the hanging,” referring to the curtains and coverings that surrounded the Tabernacle, as well as all the service connected with assembling, maintaining, and disassembling the sanctuary during the Israelites’ wilderness journeys.

While the passage addresses a specific historical assignment, it conveys timeless principles. It reminds believers of the value of faithful service to God and to one another. The dedication of the Kohathites serves as an example of diligence, integrity, and love in carrying out God‑given responsibilities.

Application follows the New Testament call to present ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). Each believer is invited to use the gifts and talents entrusted to us in service to the body of Christ and the advancement of God’s kingdom. Though the particular tasks differ for each person, the underlying principle remains: faithful, wholehearted service to the Lord, performed with excellence and a heart of love.

In conclusion, Numbers 3:31 not only records a concrete set of duties for the Kohathites but also points us to a broader call for all Christians to serve God diligently, honoring the sacred trust He places in each of us.
