“And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward.”
Context:The book of Numbers is primarily concerned with the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt. In this particular chapter, the Lord assigns specific responsibilities to the Levites, who were set apart for service in the tabernacle. Numbers 3 provides a detailed account of the Levite clans and their duties.
The Merarites:Among the Levites, the Merarites were responsible for the care and transportation of the tabernacle’s structural components, such as the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets. They played a vital role in setting up and dismantling the tabernacle whenever the Israelites moved from one location to another.
Zuriel the son of Abihail:Zuriel is mentioned as the chief or leader of the house/families of Merari. His father’s name is given as Abihail. This mention of lineage helps establish the genealogical heritage and the hierarchical structure within the Levite clans.
Pitching on the side of the tabernacle northward:The verse concludes by stating that the Merarites, under the leadership of Zuriel, were assigned to pitch their tents on the north side of the tabernacle. This positioning was significant because the tabernacle itself was located at the center of the Israelite camp, with the other tribes arranged around it in specific directions.
Symbolic significance:The positioning of the Merarite tents on the north side of the tabernacle carries symbolic meaning. In ancient Israelite cosmology, the north was often associated with the presence of God. The psalmist declares, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King” (Psalm 48:1-2, KJV). Placing the Merarites on the north side of the tabernacle emphasizes the holiness and centrality of God’s presence among His people.
