And vnder the custody and charge of the sonnes of Merari, shall bee the boards of the Tabernacle, and the barres thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, & all the vessels thereof, and all that serueth thereto: Numbers 3:36 (KJV)

Numbers 3:36 is part of the narrative found in the Book of Numbers, which primarily focuses on the wilderness wanderings of the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. In this verse the specific responsibilities and duties of the Levites, a tribe set apart for the service of God, are outlined. The sons of Merari, a branch of the Levite tribe, were assigned the task of guarding and maintaining certain components of the tabernacle—the portable sanctuary used for worship while traveling in the wilderness. The items for which they were responsible included the boards, bars, pillars, sockets, vessels, and all that pertained to the tabernacle.

These components were crucial for the stability and functionality of the tabernacle. The boards formed the framework of the structure, the bars provided support, the pillars upheld the curtains, and the sockets acted as the foundation. The vessels likely refer to the sacred utensils and objects used in the rituals and ceremonies conducted within the tabernacle. Although the Levites were not involved in the direct priesthood duties such as offering sacrifices, they were charged with the maintenance and transportation of the tabernacle.

Symbolically, the tabernacle represented the presence of God among the Israelites, and its careful preservation and proper functioning were essential for worship according to God’s instructions. The specific assignments of the Levites helped ensure that the tabernacle remained intact so that worship could continue as prescribed. Overall, Numbers 3:36 emphasizes the importance of diligence, attention to detail, and faithful service in caring for the sacred things of God. It reminds believers that every role, no matter how seemingly small or behind the scenes, has value and contributes to the greater purpose of worship and honoring God.
