Listen to this article

“And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In this verse, the focus is on the Levites, specifically the Kohathites, who were responsible for the transportation and care of the sacred items used in the worship of God.

The court and its pillars: The verse mentions the “pillars of the court.” This refers to the pillars that formed the outer boundary of the tabernacle courtyard, which served as a sacred space for worship. The courtyard was enclosed by linen curtains supported by these pillars, and it was where the Israelites gathered for various religious rituals.

Instruments and service: The verse emphasizes the instruments and service associated with the Levites. The Levites, and particularly the Kohathites, were responsible for carrying and maintaining the sacred items used in the tabernacle. This included the furniture, utensils, and other items used for worship. They had to carefully handle and transport these items to ensure their sanctity.

Reckoning by name: The verse concludes by mentioning the importance of reckoning the instruments and their specific responsibilities. Each item had a specific purpose and role, and it was crucial for the Levites to know the names and functions of these instruments. This highlights the attention to detail and the organization required in the service of God’s tabernacle.
