Numbers 31:15

And Moses said vnto them, Haue ye saued all the women aliue? Numbers 31:15 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this passage the people had just completed a military campaign against the Midianites, a campaign carried out as God commanded through Moses.

Prior to this verse God had instructed Moses to avenge the Israelites on the Midianites for leading them into idolatry and sexual immorality (see Numbers 25:16‑18). The Israelites therefore engaged in battle to execute God’s judgment against Midian.

After the battle Moses confronts the leaders of the Israelite army about the treatment of the captured women, including the virgin girls. He asks, “Have ye saved all the women alive?” Numbers 31:17‑18 (KJV) clarifies the command: “kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” Moses sees that soldiers have spared women who should have been killed while keeping alive those permitted under the command.

In the ancient Near East it was common for victorious nations to take women from defeated peoples as slaves or concubines. Moses’ concern is that such practice could introduce idolatry and sexual immorality among the Israelites, undermining their covenant relationship with God.

As the leader appointed by God, Moses bears responsibility for upholding divine law and ensuring the people’s obedience. By questioning the soldiers, he seeks to correct their behavior and reinforce the necessity of faithful adherence to God’s specific instructions.

The broader theological principle highlighted here is the importance of obeying God’s commands without compromise. Partial obedience is not acceptable in God’s sight; the Israelites were called to be a holy nation, and their devotion required complete fidelity in every aspect of life.

Application for today’s believer includes reflecting on our own obedience to God’s Word, refusing to compromise even under societal pressure, and seeking guidance from godly leaders and mentors who can hold us accountable. Just as Moses challenged the army, we should surround ourselves with people who encourage us to live in accordance with Scripture.

In conclusion, Numbers 31:15 reminds us of the vital need for wholehearted obedience to God’s commands and the role of accountability in the Christian walk. It calls each of us to examine our lives, reject half‑hearted compliance, and pursue complete devotion to the Lord in every circumstance.
