And Moses gaue the tribute which was the Lords heaue offering, vnto Eleazar the Priest, as the Lord commanded Moses. Numbers 31:41 (KJV)

Numbers 31:41 belongs to the larger narrative of Israel’s campaign against the Midianites. In this chapter God commanded Moses to exact vengeance on the Midianites for leading Israel into idolatry and sexual immorality. The Israelite army, under the leadership of Moses and Phinehas, fought the Midianites and achieved victory.

The verse itself records that Moses gave the tribute, identified as the Lord’s heave offering, to Eleazar the priest in accordance with the Lord’s command. The term “tribute” refers to a designated portion of the spoils of war—livestock, goods, and captives—that the Israelites had obtained during the campaign. The phrase “the Lord’s heave offering” indicates that a specific share of those spoils was set apart as an offering to the Lord. In the Old Testament a heave offering was a portion lifted or raised before the Lord as a symbol of consecration, acknowledging that the entire spoil belonged to Him while a particular part was reserved for Him.

Moses entrusted the handling of this heave offering to Eleazar, who was the high priest at that time, thereby obeying the divine command. This act demonstrates Moses’ reverence for God’s authority and his commitment to fulfill the Lord’s instructions in every matter.

The broader lesson drawn from this passage is the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Moses faithfully carried out the Lord’s instructions regarding the war spoils, ensuring that the designated offering was set aside and given to the priest. As believers we are reminded to emulate this obedience, aligning our actions with God’s will. Obedience reflects our love for God and our trust in His wisdom and guidance, and it remains an essential aspect of our relationship with Him.
