Numbers 31:47

Euen of the children of Israels halfe, Moses tooke one portion of fiftie, both of man and of beast, and gaue them vnto the Leuites, which kept the charge of the Tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. Numbers 31:47 (KJV)

Numbers 31 recounts the Israelites’ battle against the Midianites, a conflict brought about because the Midianites had led Israel into sin and idolatry. After the battle the Lord commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites and to count the spoils of war. Moses and Eleazar the priest surveyed the captured people, animals, and goods. In accordance with the divine command, the spoils were divided into two portions: one for the warriors who had fought, and one for the rest of the congregation, the children of Israel.

From the children of Israel’s half Moses took one portion out of fifty—both of man and of beast—and gave it to the Levites, who were charged with the care of the tabernacle of the LORD. This allocation recognized the Levites’ special role as keepers of the sanctuary and provided for their needs, since they did not receive a land inheritance like the other tribes. Their support came from tithes, offerings, and designated portions of the spoils, allowing them to devote themselves fully to priestly duties.

Moses’ action demonstrates strict obedience to the Lord’s instructions. The distribution was not arbitrary; it was carried out exactly as the LORD commanded. By setting apart a specific portion for the Levites, the Israelites honored the principle that those who serve in God’s house must be provided for.

The passage reminds believers of the importance of dedicating resources in accordance with God’s commands and of supporting those who minister in His name.

The example of Moses’ faithful execution of the command encourages believers to trust God’s directives, even in matters of resource allocation, and to uphold the provision for those who labor in the service of the tabernacle and the Lord.
