And Moses spake vnto the people, saying, Arme some of your selues vnto the warre, and let them goe against the Midianites, and auenge the Lord of Midian. Numbers 31:3 (KJV)
The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. The events recorded in Numbers 31 occur during the forty‑year period of wilderness wandering, around the thirty‑eight‑year point of that journey.
The Midianites were a nomadic people who inhabited the region east of the Jordan River and had a history of conflict with Israel. In Numbers 25 the Israelites were seduced by Midianite women, engaged in immoral acts and idolatry, and incurred God’s anger, resulting in a devastating plague. Because of this betrayal, God commanded Moses in Numbers 31 to take revenge on the Midianites.
In Numbers 31:3 Moses is instructed by God to assemble an army from among the Israelites to go to war against the Midianites. This command was a call to avenge the Lord of Midian and to execute divine justice for the Midianites’ role in leading Israel astray.
The command to wage war against the Midianites carries symbolic significance. It points to the ongoing spiritual warfare faced by believers. The New Testament exhorts Christians to put on the whole armour of God (Ephesians 6:11) and to fight against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Thus the historical battle can be viewed as a metaphor for the believer’s struggle against sin, temptation, and evil.
Lessons for today include:
God’s justice is evident in the command to avenge the Lord of Midian, reminding us that God is a just God who deals with sin and rebellion; sin has consequences and divine justice demands an appropriate response.
The battle underscores the reality of spiritual warfare, urging believers to stand firm in faith, equipped with God’s armour and guided by His Spirit.
The severe consequences that befell the Israelites because of their previous disobedience and involvement with the Midianites warn us to remain faithful to God’s commandments and avoid compromising our faith.
Moses’ obedience in carrying out God’s command highlights the importance of trusting God’s guidance and following His instructions, even when they seem difficult or challenging.
