(Now the halfe that perteined vnto the Congregation, was three hundred thousand, and thirtie thousand, and seuen thousand, and fiue hundred sheepe: Numbers 31:43 (KJV)
Numbers 31 records the aftermath of Israel’s victory over the Midianites, a people who had led Israel into idolatry and sexual immorality, provoking God’s wrath. In response, God instructed Moses to raise an army to bring judgment on Midian and to vindicate the honor of the Lord. The spoils of that campaign were divided between the warriors who had fought and the broader congregation. According to the account, the half allotted to the warriors consisted of three hundred thousand and thirty‑five thousand and two hundred and fifty sheep (Numbers 31:36). The half that pertained to the congregation is recorded in the verse as three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep, while another rendering states the figure as three hundred and thirty‑seven thousand five hundred sheep. Both figures reflect the substantial nature of the livestock taken as spoil.
The distribution illustrates God’s provision and the orderly handling of the gains among His people. The Israelites, recognizing God’s sovereignty, offered a tribute from their share as an expression of gratitude for the victory He granted. The Levites, who had no tribal inheritance, received a portion of the spoils to support their service in the tabernacle, demonstrating God’s care for those devoted to worship.
This arrangement underscores the principle that material blessings are to be managed with thankfulness and generosity, acknowledging God as the source of success. Believers are encouraged to respond to God’s faithfulness with gratitude, to share resources with those who serve Him, and to trust that He will continue to provide for the purposes He has set before His people.
