Numbers 32:7
And wherefore discourage yee the heart of the children of Israel from going ouer into the lande, which the Lord hath giuen them? Numbers 32:7 (KJV)
The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this verse the tribes of Reuben and Gad, together with half the tribe of Manasseh, approached Moses and the leaders of Israel with a request to settle on the east side of the Jordan River rather than entering Canaan with the rest of the people. Their proposal raised concerns among the other tribes, and Moses questions their motives.
God had promised to give the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. After years of wandering in the wilderness the nation stood on the brink of possessing the land He had pledged. The request of Reuben and Gad seemed to imply a lack of commitment to God’s plan and risked discouraging the hearts of the other Israelites from trusting in that promise. The word “discourage” here means to cause fear, to dishearten, or to make someone lose courage; the drafts also note that Moses may have seen the request as “tempting” the Lord, i.e., testing or provoking His patience.
Lessons for Today
- Faith and God’s Promises – The incident reminds believers of the importance of trusting God’s promises. Even when victory seems assured, hesitation can betray a lack of faith. Christians are called to rely on God’s assurances for their lives.
- Influence on Others – Our choices can profoundly affect those around us. By opting for personal convenience over collective obedience, the tribes risked undermining the confidence of the whole community. Believers should be mindful that their decisions may encourage or discourage the faith of others.
- Commitment to God’s Purpose – While Reuben and Gad had legitimate concerns for their livestock, God’s specific plan for Israel as a whole took precedence. Likewise, Christians should seek God’s guidance rather than pursue comfort or convenience that runs contrary to His purposes.
Application
Reflect on Numbers 32:7 by asking: Are there times when we are tempted to settle for something less than what God has promised? How do our actions impact the faith of those around us? Are we fully committed to God’s purpose and willing to trust His plans, even when they appear challenging? By studying and applying these lessons, we can grow in faith, encourage others, and remain steadfast in God’s promises and purposes for our lives.
