Numbers 32:7

And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord hath given them?

Context

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In this verse, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, with half the tribe of Manasseh, ask Moses for permission to settle east of the Jordan instead of crossing into Canaan. Moses questions their motives, seeing a danger to the whole nation.

God had promised Canaan to Abraham’s descendants. After years of wandering, the people stood ready to possess it. The request of Reuben and Gad seemed to show a lack of commitment to that plan and risked weakening the courage of the other Israelites.

Meaning

The word “discourage” means to cause fear or to make someone lose heart. Moses asks why they would turn the hearts of their brothers away from the land God had given them. The question “wherefore” demands a reason for such a harmful action.

Reuben and Gad had legitimate needs for their livestock, but their choice could set a bad example. Moses feared that their decision would repeat the failure of the earlier generation that refused to enter Canaan. The verse warns against letting personal comfort weaken the faith of the whole community.

Biblical connections

Later in Numbers 32, Moses reproves the two tribes, and they agree to help their brothers conquer the land before returning to their own inheritance. This connection shows the importance of learning from the past and not repeating the mistakes of those who doubted God. The unity of Israel depended on each tribe supporting the others in the mission God had given them.

Application

Reflect on this verse by asking: Are there times when we are tempted to settle for less than what God has promised? How do our actions affect the faith of those around us? Our choices can either encourage or discourage others in their walk with God.

Believers are called to trust God’s promises even when the path seems hard. We should seek God’s guidance rather than pursue comfort that runs against His purposes. When we act with faith, we strengthen the whole body of Christ.
