“Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.”
Context: The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 32, the Israelites are on the east side of the Jordan River, preparing to enter the land of Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half the tribe of Manasseh, notice that the land they are currently in is suitable for their livestock. They approach Moses with a request to settle in this land instead of crossing the Jordan River with the rest of the Israelites.
Faithful Servants: In Numbers 32:12, Moses acknowledges Caleb and Joshua for their faithfulness to the Lord. Caleb and Joshua were two of the twelve spies sent to explore the Promised Land earlier (Numbers 13). While the other spies brought back a negative report filled with fear and doubt, Caleb and Joshua remained steadfast in their trust in God’s promise. They believed that the Lord would give them victory over the inhabitants of the land.
Wholly Following the Lord: The key phrase in Numbers 32:12 is “they have wholly followed the LORD.” Caleb and Joshua were characterized by their complete devotion and obedience to God. They demonstrated unwavering faith, regardless of the circumstances or opposition they faced. Their faithfulness was not only limited to their words but was also evident in their actions. They trusted in God’s guidance and relied on His strength.
Lessons for us:
- Faith over Fear: Caleb and Joshua’s example teaches us to choose faith over fear. They refused to succumb to the doubts and fears of their fellow spies. We can learn to trust in God’s promises, even when faced with daunting challenges or seemingly impossible situations.
- Wholehearted Devotion: Caleb and Joshua’s wholehearted devotion to the Lord is an inspiration to us. They didn’t compromise their commitment or compromise with the world around them. They remained faithful to God’s commands and followed Him with all their hearts. As Christians, we are called to live with a similar devotion to God, seeking to honor Him in every aspect of our lives.
- The Blessing of Faithfulness: God recognized and rewarded the faithfulness of Caleb and Joshua. While the rest of the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years, these two men were allowed to enter the Promised Land. Their faith and obedience positioned them to experience the blessings God had in store for His people. Similarly, when we remain faithful to God, He honors our obedience and blesses us in various ways.
Application: Reflect on your own life and consider if you are wholly following the Lord. Are there areas where you need to trust Him more and demonstrate greater obedience? Seek to imitate the faithfulness of Caleb and Joshua, choosing to rely on God’s promises and live a life dedicated to Him.
