Numbers 32:19

Listen to this article

"For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In Numbers 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half the tribe of Manasseh, requested to settle in the land east of the Jordan River, rather than entering the Promised Land with the rest of Israel.

The Request of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh:In Numbers 32:1-5, the leaders of the tribes of Reuben and Gad approached Moses and expressed their desire to inherit the land east of the Jordan. They explained that the land they had found was suitable for their livestock, and they preferred not to cross over the Jordan River.

Moses’ Initial Concern:Moses was initially concerned that the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh were unwilling to help the other tribes conquer the Promised Land. He reminded them of the Israelites’ history of disobedience and their reluctance to enter Canaan after the unfavourable report from the spies (Numbers 32:6-15).

The Response of Reuben and Gad:In Numbers 32:16-19, the leaders of Reuben and Gad responded to Moses, assuring him that they would first assist the other tribes in the conquest of Canaan before settling in their allotted land. They pledged to cross over the Jordan and fight alongside their fellow Israelites until the Promised Land was secured.

Lessons from Numbers 32:

  • Unity and Cooperation:The tribes of Reuben and Gad demonstrated the importance of unity and cooperation within the community of God’s people. Despite having found favourable land on the eastern side of the Jordan, they recognised the need to support their fellow Israelites in conquering the Promised Land before settling in their own inheritance.
  • Commitment to God’s Promises:Reuben and Gad’s commitment to fulfill their responsibilities showed their faithfulness to God’s promises. They understood that their inheritance was not merely about personal convenience but about fulfilling God’s plan for the entire nation.
  • Putting Others First:The tribes of Reuben and Gad were willing to delay their personal settlement for the sake of the greater mission. They prioritised the well-being and success of the entire community over their immediate desires.
  • Obedience to Leadership:Reuben and Gad approached Moses, seeking his approval and guidance. They respected the authority God had established through Moses and were willing to submit to his leadership and direction.

Application:

  • Seek the welfare of the community:As believers, we should prioritise the well-being and success of the church community. We are called to support and assist one another in fulfilling God’s purposes.
  • Faithful stewardship:Our inheritance in Christ goes beyond personal benefits; it encompasses God’s greater plan for His people. We should be faithful stewards of the resources and opportunities God has given us.
  • Submission to spiritual leadership:Just as Reuben and Gad respected Moses’ leadership, we should submit to the authority of those God has placed in leadership positions within the church, seeking their guidance and wisdom.

Remember, studying the Bible in its entirety and seeking a deeper understanding of God’s Word will provide a more comprehensive perspective on biblical principles and teachings.
