Numbers 33:55

Listen to this article

But if ye will not driue out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come to passe that those which ye let remaine of them, shall be prickes in your eyes, and thornes in your sides, and shal vexe you in the land wherein ye dwell. Numbers 33:55 (KJV)

This warning forms part of a larger passage in which God commands the Israelites to expel the peoples occupying Canaan, the land He promised as their inheritance. The statement serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that would follow if the people failed to obey this specific directive.

Historical Context

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. The verse appears after forty years of wandering and just before the nation’s entry into Canaan. At this juncture God stresses the necessity of completely driving out the existing inhabitants, linking obedience to the fulfillment of His covenant promise.

Spiritual Significance

Obedience to God’s commands is the central theme. The passage underscores that God’s plan for Israel required faithful adherence; any compromise would bring persistent trouble. The imagery of “pricks in your eyes” and “thorns in your sides” conveys how lingering compromise becomes a continual source of pain and distraction. The warning also highlights the need for faithfulness and commitment, urging the people to trust that God would grant them victory over their enemies when they remain steadfast.

Application for Believers

The principle extends to the life of the modern believer. First, complete obedience calls us to remove sinful influences, negative habits, and attitudes that hinder our relationship with God. Second, vigilance against compromise is essential; allowing even small departures from God’s Word can produce ongoing spiritual challenges. Finally, trusting in God’s promises mirrors the Israelites’ call to rely on His faithfulness for provision, protection, and guidance.

In summary, Numbers 33:55 emphasizes that half‑hearted obedience leads to lasting trouble, while wholehearted faithfulness brings the blessings God intends. Believers are therefore urged to pursue total obedience, guard against compromise, and rest confidently in the sure promises of the Almighty.
