Numbers 33:6

Listen to this article

And they departed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wildernesse. Numbers 33:6 (KJV)

The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Old Testament, records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In chapter 33 Moses lists each stage of the march, noting where the people camped. In Numbers 33:6 we read that the Israelites departed from Elim and pitched their camp in the wilderness between Elim and the Red Sea.

Elim was an oasis blessed with twelve wells and seventy palm trees, a place of rest and refreshment after the people had left the wilderness of Sin. The Red Sea, called the Sea of Reeds in Hebrew, was the body of water the Israelites would later cross during the Exodus from Egypt.

Elim serves as a vivid symbol of God’s provision and refreshment. It demonstrates the Lord’s care for His people, meeting both physical and spiritual needs in the midst of a harsh journey. The abundance of water and shade reminds believers that God supplies what is necessary for life and renewal.

From Elim we draw several lessons. First, God provides: even when the road is difficult, He remains faithful to supply our needs. Second, there are seasons of rest; God allows moments of respite to regain strength for the next phase of the journey. Third, the blessings of Elim—wells and palm trees—invite us to appreciate and enjoy the goodness God gives, cultivating gratitude for the simple pleasures He places before us.

Application follows naturally. Trust in God’s provision as the Israelites did, relying on Him for physical, emotional, and spiritual sustenance. Intentionally seek times of rest, carving out moments to be in God’s presence, to study His Word, and to enjoy His creation. Develop an attitude of gratitude, recognizing the blessings along the way and sharing that joy with others.

Remember, the march from Elim toward the Promised Land was not without challenges, yet God’s faithfulness never wavered. Likewise, as we travel our own life journeys, we can depend on God’s provision, embrace periods of renewal, and rejoice in the blessings He provides.
