Numbers 33:13

Listen to this article

And they departed from Dophkah, and encamped in Alush. Numbers 33:13 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness, including a detailed list of encampments in chapter 33. Verse 13 mentions Dophkah and Alush as successive stops during their travels. Dophkah was the twelfth encampment following their departure from Egypt at Rameses (Numbers 33:5), and Alush followed immediately after. The Bible does not provide specific details about these locations or their significance, and they are not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture, making precise geographical identification difficult. Scripture offers no explicit spiritual meaning for these names or locations, and any attempt to derive symbolic interpretations beyond the recorded facts would be speculative.

Nevertheless, the movement from Dophkah to Alush can illustrate broader spiritual principles for believers. Dophkah represents a starting point—a place of departure. In the Israelites’ case it marked their leaving Egypt, symbolising liberation from bondage. Likewise, Christians begin their spiritual journey by turning away from their old lives of sin and embracing the freedom found in Christ. The departure from Dophkah reminds us of the importance of leaving behind our past and stepping into a new life in God.

Alush, where the Israelites encamped, represents a resting place or temporary settlement. After leaving Dophkah, they set up camp at Alush, indicating a time of pause, reflection, and nourishment in God’s presence. In our own walk with God, there are seasons when He calls us to rest, to reflect, and to find refreshment in His presence. Alush teaches the significance of seeking regular times of rest and spiritual refreshment.

Although the verse offers limited historical or theological detail, it still encourages believers to reflect on their own journey of faith. It reminds us to depart from the old, to trust God’s guidance in moving forward, and to value the periods of rest that sustain us on the way to the promised inheritance.
