Listen to this article

And the border shall fetch a comcompasse from Azmon vnto the riuer of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea. Numbers 34:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger passage in Numbers where God commands Moses to instruct the children of Israel regarding the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes. God outlines the specific boundaries that each tribe is to possess.

Numbers 34:5 focuses on describing the southern border of the land. The verse mentions two important geographical landmarks: Azmon and the river of Egypt. Azmon is understood to be a location in the southern portion of Canaan, near the border between Israel and Edom (sometimes described as the western border of Edom). The river of Egypt refers to the Wadi el‑Arish, a riverbed or seasonal stream that marked the border between Egypt and Canaan.

The phrase “the border shall fetch a compass” (or “the border of the south shall be”) indicates that the border runs from Azmon toward the river of Egypt, curving along that line. The term “goings out” refers to the endpoint of this border segment, which is at the sea—the Mediterranean Sea.

From a broader perspective, this verse highlights the precision and intentionality of God’s plan for the division of the land among His people. The detailed boundaries provided by God ensured that each tribe would have its designated portion within the Promised Land.

As we reflect on this verse, several spiritual lessons emerge. First, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises; the borders described were part of the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and now God was bringing His people into the land He had promised. Second, the idea of boundaries underscores the importance of order and structure; God is a God of order, and His instructions regarding the division of the land reflect this character. Believers can apply this principle by establishing godly boundaries that align with His Word, helping us stay within His will and purpose. Finally, the verse serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty over the land and His control over geographical and political aspects of the world. He determines borders and territories, and ultimately He is in control of all things.

In summary, Numbers 34:5 outlines the southern border of the Promised Land, emphasizing God’s faithfulness, order, and sovereignty. The passage invites us to consider God’s promises, align our lives with His boundaries, and trust in His control over all things.
