From mount Hor, ye shall point out your border vnto the entrance of Hamath: and the goings foorth of the border shall be to Zedad. Numbers 34:8 (KJV)

“And from mount Hor ye shall measure to the entrance of Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zedad.” In this verse we find a description of the boundaries of the Promised Land as outlined by God to Moses. The book of Numbers primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land, and this particular verse provides specific instructions regarding the northern boundary of the land.

The verse mentions two important geographical locations: Mount Hor and Hamath. Mount Hor was a mountain in the region of Edom, which lies to the southeast of the Promised Land. Hamath was a significant city in the northern part of modern‑day Syria, well‑known in biblical times and often used as a reference point for defining the borders of the land. The instruction is that the Israelites should measure from Mount Hor to the entrance of Hamath in order to establish the northern border, with Zedad identified as one of the points on that border.

From a broader perspective, this verse emphasizes the precise and detailed instructions given by God to the Israelites concerning the division of the land among the twelve tribes. The boundaries were not left to chance or human decision but were established by God Himself. This demonstrates God’s care and provision for His people, ensuring that each tribe would receive its designated portion.

Overall, Numbers 34:8 provides insight into the geographical details and divine instructions concerning the northern border of the Promised Land. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and of His meticulous attention to every aspect of His plan for His people.
