Numbers 4:38
And those that were numbred of the sonnes of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers; Numbers 4:38 (KJV)
The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Old Testament, records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this passage the focus is on the Gershonites, one of the three Levitical clans charged with the transportation and care of the Tabernacle and its furnishings.
The Gershonites belonged to the tribe of Levi alongside the Kohathites and the Merarites. Each clan received specific duties concerning the Tabernacle, the sacred dwelling place of God among His people. The Gershonites were assigned to carry and transport the curtains, coverings, and various other items used in the Tabernacle.
Numbers 4:38 records that the Gershonites were “numbered … throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers.” This wording shows that the clan was organized into distinct families, each with its own role and responsibility. The division by families and ancestral houses helped maintain order and accountability in the performance of their duties.
The careful numbering and organization of the Gershonites highlight the importance of order and structure within God’s people. God is a God of order, not chaos, and He expects His people to carry out their tasks with diligence and precision. By assigning specific roles to each family and individual, He ensured that the Tabernacle and its components were handled properly and respectfully.
Although we are not called to transport a physical Tabernacle today, the verse teaches timeless principles. It reminds us of the value of organization, order, and accountability within the Church and in other areas of life. Every member possesses unique gifts and talents that contribute to the well‑being and growth of the community. Just as the Gershonites had specific responsibilities, we too have roles to fulfil in God’s kingdom, and we must perform them faithfully and diligently.
The passage also underscores the need for unity and collaboration. The Gershonites worked together with the Kohathites and Merarites to ensure the proper functioning of the Tabernacle. Likewise, in our Christian walk we are called to cooperate harmoniously, valuing each other’s contributions and supporting one another.
Application: Reflect on your role within your church or community. How can you use your gifts and talents to contribute effectively? Emphasize the value of order and structure in your personal and professional life, recognizing that God desires excellence in all things. Seek opportunities to collaborate and work in unity with others, promoting teamwork and community. Remember that no matter how small or seemingly insignificant your role may appear, it plays an essential part in God’s larger plan.
