Listen to this article

And they shall put it, and all the vessels thereof, within a couering of badgers skinnes, and shall put it vpon a barre. Numbers 4:10 (KJV)

In Numbers 4:10, the passage describes instructions given to the Levites regarding the tabernacle’s sacred objects. In this verse, the passage is part of a larger context where Moses is receiving instructions from God regarding the responsibilities and duties of the Levites, the priestly tribe, in relation to the tabernacle. The tabernacle was the portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The verse states: ‘And they shall put all the vessels wherewith they minister about the sanctuary in a cloth of blue, and shall cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put the staves thereon.’ This verse details the process of preparing and transporting the tabernacle’s vessels. The badgers’ skins serve as an outer protective layer, though some translations interpret the animal skin differently, such as porpoise or dolphin. Additionally, the verse instructs the Levites to place the covered vessels on a bar. This bar, or pole, was used for carrying the items, providing support and stability during their transportation. The bar allowed for multiple Levites to share the load, making it easier to transport the items through the wilderness. The significance of these instructions lies in their meticulous attention to detail and reverence for sacred objects.

Significance: The significance of this verse lies in its practical instructions for the organisation and care of the tabernacle and its sacred objects. The detailed instructions demonstrate the meticulousness and reverence with which the Israelites were to handle the holy items used in their worship. It also emphasises the importance of proper preparation and protection of sacred objects, indicating the value placed on maintaining the sanctity and integrity of the tabernacle. Proper covering and handling ensured the sanctity of the tabernacle’s contents during transportation, reflecting the importance placed on maintaining holiness in worship practices. Overall, Numbers 4:10 highlights the attention to detail and reverence for sacred objects displayed in the instructions given to the Levites regarding the transportation and protection of the vessels used in the tabernacle.
