Listen to this article

“And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: Numbers 4:9 (KJV)”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to Moses. Numbers primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land and includes various laws and instructions given by God.

The Tabernacle:Numbers 4:9 is a part of the detailed instructions for the responsibilities of the Levites, specifically the Kohathite division, in the transportation and maintenance of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was a portable sanctuary where God’s presence dwelled among the Israelites during their wilderness wanderings.

Significance of the Blue Cloth:In this verse, the Kohathites were instructed to take a cloth of blue to cover the candlestick of the light, along with its lamps, tongs, snuff dishes, and oil vessels. The blue cloth served as a protective covering for these items during transportation.

Symbolism:The colour blue holds significance throughout the Bible. In the context of the Tabernacle, blue is associated with heavenly things and the divine. It represents the presence of God and His holiness. By covering the candlestick and other items with a blue cloth, the Israelites were acknowledging the sacredness and importance of these objects in the service of God.

Spiritual Lessons:Although this verse primarily deals with the practical aspects of caring for the Tabernacle, it also offers some spiritual lessons for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of treating things associated with God’s service with reverence and care. Just as the Israelites were instructed to handle the items in the Tabernacle with respect, we should approach our worship and service to God with reverence, recognising His presence and holiness.

Application:As believers, we are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and we should strive to keep ourselves pure and holy, reflecting the sacredness of God’s presence within us. This involves not only caring for our physical bodies but also cultivating a lifestyle of worship, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word.

In summary, Numbers 4:9 provides instructions for the Kohathites to cover the candlestick and other items of the Tabernacle with a blue cloth during transportation. This verse reminds us of the need to approach the things of God with reverence and care, reflecting His holiness in our lives as we worship and serve Him.
