And on the eight day he shal bring two turtles or two yong pigeons to the Priest, to the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation. Numbers 6:10 (KJV)
Numbers 6:10 is part of the instructions given by God to Moses concerning the Nazirite vow. The Nazirite vow was a voluntary vow that individuals could take to dedicate themselves to the Lord for a specific period of time. In Numbers 6, God provides detailed instructions to Moses about the requirements and regulations for those who take the Nazirite vow.
These regulations include abstaining from wine and any product of the grapevine, avoiding contact with dead bodies, and refraining from cutting their hair.
Numbers 6:10 specifically addresses what the Nazirite must do at the end of his consecration period, whether the vow is completed or the consecration is interrupted by defilement. If the Nazirite becomes defiled, he must shave his head on the seventh day and, on the eighth day, bring two turtles or two young pigeons to the priest at the door of the tabernacle. When the vow is completed, the same offering of two turtledoves or two young pigeons is brought to the priest at the entrance of the tabernacle.
The offering was part of the purification process and a common expression of thanksgiving in the Old Testament. The choice between turtledoves and young pigeons may have depended on the person’s financial means or availability.
It is important to note that these instructions were specific to the time and context in which they were given. Today, as Christians, we are under the New Covenant established by Jesus Christ and are no longer bound by the ceremonial laws and rituals of the Old Testament. Nevertheless, we can still draw spiritual lessons from this verse. It reminds us of the importance of honoring our commitments to God, offering thanksgiving for His faithfulness, and seeking spiritual guidance and affirmation from trusted leaders as we navigate our journey of faith.
