One golden spoone of ten shekels, full of incense: Numbers 7:56 (KJV)

“And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, one bullock (ox), five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Nethaneel the son of Zuar.” The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various accounts of their experiences, including laws, census records, and instructions for worship. In this verse we see that Nethaneel, the son of Zuar, presented an offering of peace offerings. Peace offerings were a type of sacrifice in the Old Testament, given voluntarily as an expression of thanksgiving, devotion, or making peace with God. The offering was accompanied by a communal meal, where the worshipper, the priests, and sometimes the offerer’s family would eat together.

The animals offered by Nethaneel consisted of one bullock (ox), five rams, five male goats, and five lambs of the first year. These animals were considered valuable and represented his dedication and gratitude to God. Peace offerings were a means for the Israelites to enter into a state of peace and fellowship with God. The act of presenting these offerings represented a desire to maintain a right relationship with God and to acknowledge His blessings and provisions in their lives.

Peace offerings were voluntary and were not commanded by God as a requirement. They were a way for individuals to express their personal devotion and thanksgiving to God. This highlights the importance of heartfelt worship and gratitude in our relationship with God. Nethaneel’s offering was generous, reflecting his dedication and willingness to give of his resources to honor God. This teaches us the value of generosity and wholehearted devotion in our worship and service to God.

Like Nethaneel, we should cultivate an attitude of gratitude and thankfulness for God’s blessings in our lives. We can express our thanksgiving through heartfelt prayers, praise, and acts of service to others. As believers in Christ, we have peace with God through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, yet we must continually seek to maintain a right relationship with Him by confessing our sins, repenting, and embracing His forgiveness and grace. Nethaneel’s offering reminds us to give our best to God, not only in material possessions but also in our time, talents, and hearts. Let us offer ourselves fully to Him, serving Him and others with generosity and dedication. Remember, the primary purpose of studying the Bible is to deepen our relationship with God and gain a better understanding of His character and His plan for our lives.
