Numbers Chapter 16

Summery

Numbers 16 recounts a rebellion led by Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and 250 other prominent men from the tribe of Reuben, who challenged Moses and Aaron’s authority in the wilderness. They accused Moses and Aaron of exalting themselves above the congregation and questioned why they should be the exclusive leaders. Moses, deeply troubled, sought guidance from God. In response, God instructed Moses to gather the rebels and their families and warned the congregation to move away from them.

The next day, Moses confronted Korah and his followers, pleading with them to reconsider their rebellion and reminding them of their privileges as Levites. However, Korah and his group remained defiant, gathering before the tabernacle with their censers. God’s glory then appeared, and He declared that He would distinguish between those who rebelled and those who followed His appointed leaders.

Suddenly, the ground beneath the rebels split open, swallowing them and everything they possessed. Fire consumed the 250 men offering incense, as a warning to the entire congregation. Despite witnessing these events, the people still grumbled against Moses and Aaron, leading to a plague. Aaron promptly interceded, offering incense and standing between the living and the dead, and the plague was halted.
