Obadiah 1:6

Listen to this article

“How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!”

Context:The book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, consisting of only 21 verses. It is a prophetic book that focuses on the judgment of Edom, the descendants of Esau, for their mistreatment of the Israelites. The verse in question is part of a larger passage where the prophet Obadiah delivers a message of judgment against Edom.

Historical Background:Esau was the twin brother of Jacob, and they were the sons of Isaac and grandsons of Abraham. Esau was known for his impulsive nature and sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29-34). Later, Esau became the ancestor of the Edomites, who inhabited the mountainous region southeast of Israel. The Edomites often clashed with the Israelites throughout history.

Analysis:In Obadiah 1:6, the prophet marvels at how thoroughly the things of Esau are searched out and his hidden things sought up. This verse expresses surprise and wonderment at the extent to which Edom’s secrets have been exposed and their hidden treasures revealed. The verse suggests that despite their attempts to hide their true nature or their ill intentions, God’s knowledge and justice penetrate all things.

  • God’s Omniscience:The verse highlights the all-knowing nature of God. It serves as a reminder that nothing is hidden from Him. God has complete knowledge of all things, including the secrets and hidden intentions of individuals and nations. This should lead us to live with integrity and honesty, knowing that God sees everything.
  • Accountability for Our Actions:The verse also implies that Edom’s hidden things were brought to light for judgment. It teaches us that God holds us accountable for our actions and motives. We may try to conceal our true selves or our wrongdoings, but ultimately, God will bring everything to light and judge accordingly.
  • Trust in God’s Justice:The passage assures us that God’s justice will prevail. Even when it seems that injustice goes unnoticed or unpunished, God sees everything and will bring about justice in due time. We can find comfort and hope in knowing that God is just and will hold all accountable for their actions.
    • Honesty and Integrity:We should strive to live with honesty and integrity in all aspects of our lives. Recognising that God sees everything should motivate us to be people of truth, both in our words and actions.
    • Trust in God’s Timing:When we witness injustice or wrongdoing, we can trust in God’s timing for justice. Just as Edom’s hidden things were eventually exposed, we can have faith that God will bring justice and make all things right in His perfect time.
    • Seeking God’s Forgiveness:If we have hidden sins or wrongdoings in our lives, we should bring them before God, confess them, and seek His forgiveness. We can find comfort in knowing that God is merciful and offers forgiveness to those who genuinely repent and turn to Him.

Remember to read the entire book of Obadiah to gain a deeper understanding of the context and message of this prophetic book.
